Mantras

  • I wake to sleep, and take my waking slow.
I feel my fate in what I cannot fear.
I learn by going where I have to go.
    --Theodore Roethke
  • Freedom is what you do with what's been done to you.
    -- Jean-Paul Sartre
  • I'm Nobody! Who are you?
    Are you—Nobody—Too?
Then there's a pair of us!
    Don't tell! they'd advertise—you know!

    How dreary—to be—Somebody!
    How public—like a Frog—
To tell one's name—the livelong June—
    To an admiring Bog!
    --Emily Dickinson

You make me realize that I really need to take up knitting as a break, rather than putzing around on the internets. And I have a bolero pattern, and yarn for it, and so really, there's no excuse.

I have the exact same bad habit about the TV and the laptop, except the handicraft I should be doing instead is embroidery. Perhaps this will give me the budge (or boot in the butt) that I need!

You watch, like, WAY too much TV.

hey, where do I ever say how much TV I watch?? besides, I love TV, and refuse to consider it one of the world's evils.

Paige - it is a very satisfying break, I think!

Jackie - my mom used to embroider. I love embroidery silks, but it seems much harder to me than knitting!

I listen to the radio a lot whilst I knit, rather than have the flicker of the TV going on. Multi-shirking!

Why not make your sweater in a cotton yarn? Pure cotton doesn't always wear too well long term, but it's nice to work and not-itchy if wool doesn't like you (me too for cheap wools AND cheap acrylics) and at least here in the UK you can get lovely colours that feel good for much less than the equivalent price in wool.

"The other great thing about knitting is that I can't pretend that I'm not really knitting and I really will get to my work in a moment; I have to decide that yes, I am not going to work right now, I am going to do something fun. And I think it's good for me to make those decisions consciously, and not just let time slip away from me as I dither and putz."

That paragraph is golden. It makes me want to take up knitting, because I, too, tend to just putz on the internet. I waste huge amounts of time, but I don't get any actual relaxation or break in the process. But for now, instead of knitting, I will work on my Note. You have inspired me.
