Happy New Year!!

I think this is where I'm supposed to wax introspective about what happened in 2009, and don't get me wrong, I love reading everyone else's recaps of the year, but I'm not sure I have the patience to do it myself. Partly because being back in school again, this time of year doesn't really feel *new* (I mean, I know I never LEFT school, and so I could have said this at any time while working as a prof. But the turn of the school year is more significant to me as a student, I think, because it marks my transition from 1L to 2L and ultimately to 3L, bringing me closer to the completion of a goal. It didn't feel quite like that when I taught the classes). But also because I left way too many brain cells in the pages of my final exams.

In fact, I was going to do a "what have you done this year?" meme, but it got too hard to come up with answers that were any different from last year's answers. I figured out that I'd done a ton of new stuff, but all law-related, and that I'd put a lot of personal stuff on hold. It's not surprising that stuff like travel gets put on hold for law school, but it makes for fairly dull reading.

So, I'm not going to worry any more about 2009. It was, mostly, a pretty decent year; I learned stuff, I progressed in law school, I wasn't at the top of the heap but I did fine, and I got some useful legal experience. My life was fairly uneventful besides school, but far too many people I know and care about were touched by tragedy, so I think of the year as drenched in solemn hues. I would say the best thing about it was that it was a year in which I moved forward. I haven't arrived yet; I may never fully arrive; but I'm moving in the right direction.
