Mantras

  • I wake to sleep, and take my waking slow.
I feel my fate in what I cannot fear.
I learn by going where I have to go.
    --Theodore Roethke
  • Freedom is what you do with what's been done to you.
    -- Jean-Paul Sartre
  • I'm Nobody! Who are you?
    Are you—Nobody—Too?
Then there's a pair of us!
    Don't tell! they'd advertise—you know!

    How dreary—to be—Somebody!
    How public—like a Frog—
To tell one's name—the livelong June—
    To an admiring Bog!
    --Emily Dickinson

I have so much gray that it looks like highlights or what my mother used to call a "frost." That's what I'm telling myself anyway. I don't color b/c I suck at maintenance.

In my experience, the gray comes on like a vengeance after some mysterious date is passed -- the "really getting old" day that no one warns you about. Right about the same time that you see yourself smiling in the mirror and gasp because you never realized you had crow's feet. Yeah, it sucks.

For what it is worth - years ago I read somebody's remark to the effect that "since I went gray I get away with a lot more than I used to". When I started going gray I began keeping track and there seems to be something to that observation.
