Mantras

  • I wake to sleep, and take my waking slow.
I feel my fate in what I cannot fear.
I learn by going where I have to go.
    --Theodore Roethke
  • Freedom is what you do with what's been done to you.
    -- Jean-Paul Sartre
  • I'm Nobody! Who are you?
    Are you—Nobody—Too?
Then there's a pair of us!
    Don't tell! they'd advertise—you know!

    How dreary—to be—Somebody!
    How public—like a Frog—
To tell one's name—the livelong June—
    To an admiring Bog!
    --Emily Dickinson

Of all the possible reasons for a future J.D. to miss class, jury duty seems like the best. As for the teaching prep anxiety, let me say this: even though I've not yet started applying to law schools, when I read about someone else prepping for tomorrow, guilt drives me off the internet to prep more myself. I think that by the time you finish the degree, these inadequacies become ingrained: "Someone's working harder/more responsibly than me!?! Crap! Must go be good!"

SO just got a form last week for determining his eligibility for jury duty. He was definitely Not Thrilled. Hopefully if/when he's called it will be after the semester ends, and not during the summer institute he's organizing!

funny. It's kind of like the dream where you suddenly realize you must take a final exam for a class you forgot you were enrolled in.

I'm not so sure that being a law student will automatically get you kicked off. (based on my own experience a few years ago being *sure* for several reasons (not law school) that I would get kicked off, and was then chosen).

Well, from what I hear they ask if anyone has any connection to the law, and they boot all those people. Though I'd actually find it interesting to be on a jury...

Not a day goes by where I don't envy my students. I would far prefer attending a lecture over preparing one. Yikes. Maybe it's time to jump ship . . .
