Mantras

  • Freedom is what you do with what's been done to you.
    -- Jean-Paul Sartre
  • I'm Nobody! Who are you?
    Are you—Nobody—Too?
Then there's a pair of us!
    Don't tell! they'd advertise—you know!

    How dreary—to be—Somebody!
    How public—like a Frog—
To tell one's name—the livelong June—
    To an admiring Bog!
    --Emily Dickinson

The number one reason I'm glad we're moving

Because in our current apartment, you CAN'T SEE THE SKY.* We're on the ground floor, with a three-story building next to us, and a six-foot fence between us. The fence is a good thing, so that we and our next-door neighbors aren't forced to live with the blinds down every day or else see everything going on in each others' apartments. But you can only see the sky by getting up close to the window and craning your neck to look up into the narrow channel between our building and the next - so it's almost easier to check online whether it's sunny or cloudy, than go direct to the source. Now that the days are getting longer and the angle of the sun has changed, we do get some slivers of sunshine from about 10-2, and when the sun is out at certain times of the day we can see the sun gleaming on the fence even when it doesn't reach our windows. But none of this really mitigates the fact that our apartment is a dark little place 90% of the time.

At night, of course, this isn't an issue, and during the winter, when days were shorter, it wasn't that big a deal, either. But on mornings like this one, when I can see everything outside glowing in the sun - the amazing, fierce, clear sun you get here, where you're a mile closer to it and there's virtually no moisture softening its gaze - sitting in this apartment is just depressing.

Because it seems that summer has arrived here in the high country - we're not facing the heat that southern California has, thank God, but I consider highs in the 80s legitimately summer-like. It is VERY hard to think about teaching right now! (ooh, I know, I have to drive out to our storage space to find a book - a legitimate reason to get out in the nice weather!!)

*Although it was a close fight between this and the absolute micro-ness of our current kitchen.

Yes, it is HOT over here today! I didn't get any sleep last night. I'm jealous of you and your 80 degree weather (it was at least that inside last night).

However, I'm about to get revenge by driving out to the beach this afternoon. Neener neener. :)
