Mantras

  • I wake to sleep, and take my waking slow.
I feel my fate in what I cannot fear.
I learn by going where I have to go.
    --Theodore Roethke
  • Freedom is what you do with what's been done to you.
    -- Jean-Paul Sartre
  • I'm Nobody! Who are you?
    Are you—Nobody—Too?
Then there's a pair of us!
    Don't tell! they'd advertise—you know!

    How dreary—to be—Somebody!
    How public—like a Frog—
To tell one's name—the livelong June—
    To an admiring Bog!
    --Emily Dickinson

Listed below are links to weblogs that reference Dear Dean X, New Kid could not finish her grading today...:

I'm poking somewhat desultorily at my grading... being distracted by the web far too much. But I have to go in to campus shortly, department meeting, bleah.

Hey, that's one of the best excuses I've heard yet.

I'm having a similar day, only my cat isn't sleeping. She wants to play fetch. Nonstop.

Definitely in avoidance mode. I completely forgot that I have to grade a set of comps (due tomorrow). I'm at the coffee shop and it just slipped my mind to stick them in my briefcase. Rats. You just can't imagine how upset that made me.

lol. yes, the cat is keeping you from grading.

Umm... well, I'm ending my sabbatical this semester, so I'm certainly not grading! But managing to avoid lots of other things, nonetheless.

I think that's a perfectly good reason not to be able to grade.

Is this the professorial version of "the dog ate my homework?"

    Yours in procrastination!

I think I'll be writing a similar letter... though due to sheer laziness, not cat. Well, I guess I *could* blame it on the cat...

So, a cat is snoozing on the paperwork and your stuck with nothing to do but blog... such a sorry state.

    {:-P
    {:-D

That's as good an excuse as any!

My grading is done, but only because it was due on Monday. Otherwise I'd be sitting on the couch, playing with the cat, avoiding things I need to do...

Oh, wait. I am sitting on the couch, playing with the cat, avoiding other things I need to do. *sigh*

Well, my desk is clean, and I'd like to either go to lunch or go to the gym. But seeing as how I have done no grading at all, except for the graduating seniors ...

So, basically, you were in a catatonic state? That seems like a good excuse to me!

I'm staying away from the grading for today. I'm pretending that today is a writing day. Look how well I'm working on my dissertation, this very moment.

Does this comment count towards my word count for the day?

I think this is the most legitmate excuse I've heard in a long time.

Linda - Middle Cat used to fetch! She doesn't any more, because Youngest Cat gets in the middle. :-(

anbruch - yeah, you sound crushed. ;-)

Bardiac - hee hee hee hee hee hee hee. I feel like Henry VI.

Kate - I think you should definitely add the comment to your word count!
